Anti-ageing

Anti-ageing at the top of the market, over 50 and over 60

Mature skin has different needs and a different budget, and it is the segment the industry markets to hardest. Here is what genuinely helps, what does not, and where the money is better spent.

What actually has evidence behind it

The honest hierarchy is short and it has not changed in years. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen prevents more visible ageing than everything else on this page combined. A retinoid is the single best-evidenced active for lines and texture. Vitamin C at a functional concentration and pH has good supporting evidence. After that comes a large field of ingredients with plausible mechanisms and thinner data. Nothing about that hierarchy requires spending at the top of the market — the best-evidenced products in each of those three categories are all available for under $50.

Where spending more genuinely helps mature skin

Two places, and they are real. The first is barrier support: skin gets drier and more easily compromised with age, and the heavy occlusive formulations at the top of the market are genuinely excellent at sealing a dry barrier. The second is tolerability. Mature and reactive skin often cannot tolerate the concentrations that work well on younger skin, and expensive products tend to be gentler, better buffered and better formulated for comfort. Both are legitimate reasons to spend.

What to be sceptical of

Any product marketed for anti-ageing that contains no retinoid, no meaningful vitamin C and no sunscreen is a moisturizer, whatever the packaging says. Moisturizers are useful — hydrated skin looks visibly better and fine lines are genuinely less apparent on a well-hydrated face — but that effect resets daily and is not the same as changing skin over time. Read the ingredient list, not the front of the box, and note which of our reviews say this explicitly.
